When Will My Student Loan Repayment Begin?

Many college students and recent graduates ask a common question. When will my student loan repayment begin? The answer to that question can be very complicated. When you apply for a student loan, you choose your repayment option. You can choose to begin making payments immediately, you can opt to pay the interest only during the time that you are in school, or you can choose to defer payments until after you graduate or withdraw from school. If you choose the latter, loan payments will begin six months after your enrollment ceases.

If you decide to return to school, your student loan repayment will once again enter into a deferment period. This will apply, providing you are enrolled in an eligible school on a half or full time basis. Eligibility for a deferment does not mean you are required to take it. You may choose to continue making payments while you are in school. Interest will continue to accrue while the loan is deferred. However, you will not have to repay it immediately. It will be added to the balance of your loan or loans.

Financial hardships happen to the best of us. If you are having trouble making your payments, due to a job loss or an illness or an injury, your student loan repayment may be eligible for forbearance. Monthly payments can be temporarily postponed for a period of time, allowing the borrower to get back on his or her feet. The loan holder can grant forbearance in intervals of up to twelve months at a time and for up to a total of three years.
